National Society for Minorities in Hospitality

Life has been pretty crazy, we have a lot going on! I have been trying to keep my posts related to Hospitality, so today I will tell you about NSMH.

The National Society for Minorities in Hospitality was founded in 1989 at Cornell. Basically to give a leg up to minorities (women and basically any race other than white, ha!). Now it is flourishing and it here to help more than just minorities grow in their professional development and hospitality careers.

I was first introduced to NSMH this past Fall semester when I happened to walk in on a meeting, pure accident. We went to the National Conference in February. And it was nuts. The conference is there to develop your perspective on middle and upper management in hospitality and for the career fair on the last day. The competition is crazy. I realized we needed to up our game seriously if we wanted to compete.

When we returned Brittany and I were full of ideas to be better prepared for next year. We just had our first meeting on Tuesday and we had 30 people there! That's amazing for a commuting school of 160. Everyone was so excited to do so much this year, it was incredible. We had elections for our auxiliary board positions and I think we really have some great people lined up to take the society and the school to the next level professionally.

As the VP, I feel a lot of stress at this point planning everything, but I'm excited how to see it come together. We have our first officer meeting on Tuesday where we will put together our calendar for the Fall. We are going to have an etiquette dinner and a fundraising dinner plus a friends of finals week. We are also looking to have meetings every 2 weeks that are professionalism workshops. As well as a monthly social event and community event.

Since we don't really have much going on right now there isn't much to post, but I promise to keep you updated on that.
